Maria Pia Lighthouse, has been listed in its entirety, including a special protection zone extending from its outer boundaries, covering a total area of 11,797 m\u00b2, comprising the listed zone \u2013 the \u2018non aedificandi\u2019 zone, an area of 8,057.5 m\u00b2, and the buffer zone \u2013 the restricted-development zone, covering an area of 3,745.8 m\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>The designation of this monument as a National Cultural Heritage site highlights its significance in shaping the history of this city and the country, given its maritime heritage, and is based on three fundamental principles:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to contribute to the management and safeguarding of its integrity as a constituent element of national identity;<\/li>\n<li>to put in place mechanisms to ensure that they are maintained regularly, thereby preventing their deterioration; and<\/li>\n<li>to enhance the building and put it to cultural use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The D. Maria Pia Lighthouse is a heritage site with distinctive characteristics within the national context, which are intrinsic to its classification, recognising its role as a historical and cultural landmark, in order to ensure its preservation given its unique nature, with a view to promoting historical and cultural tourism and bringing the public closer to this heritage, so that everyone is engaged in its preservation.<\/p>\n<p>Situated at the southern tip of the island of Santiago, it was the first lighthouse to be built in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n<p>It has served, and continues to serve, as a source of inspiration for artists, poets and intellectuals, photographers, researchers and students from a variety of fields.
