Prime Minister visits Praia Central Prison and notes “a profound transformation” in the humanisation of the prison system

The Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, visited the Praia Central Prison this morning, the 26th, where he was able to witness “a profound transformation, not only in terms of infrastructure, but above all in terms of the humanisation and social reintegration within the prison system”.

“Today there are better accommodation facilities and, above all, genuine opportunities for vocational training in the fields of mechanics, agriculture, baking, dressmaking, electromechanics, the arts and other productive sectors,” he said.

“Prison deprives people of their freedom, but it cannot deprive them of their human dignity,” he emphasised, adding that he had seen a clear effort to prepare men and women so that, once they have served their sentences, they can return to society with skills, a profession and their heads held high.

“Prisons must also be places that lead to a new start. Reintegration depends on the work of the institutions, but also on the awareness and commitment of the prisoners themselves to make the most of the opportunities created,” argued Ulisses Correia e Silva, who took the opportunity to convey a message: “Freedom will come. Make the most of this time to gain qualifications and return to your families with dignity, ready for a new life.”.
