On 28 April, the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister for Youth and Sport, Carlos do Canto Monteiro, presided over the opening of the new gym at the Cesaltina Ramos Multipurpose Secondary School (ESPCR) in the city of Praia.
The facilities, the result of a partnership between the Institute of Sport and Youth (IDJ) and the school, form part of the Cape Verdean Government’s strategy to increase investment in school sport, promote physical activity and diversify the sports practised in schools.
During the ceremony, which formed part of the celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of ESPCR, the Minister emphasised that the new facility represents a milestone in the plan to improve the school’s sports facilities and that it will serve both pupils and the local community through introductory gymnastics programmes and physical activities for different age groups.
Carlos Monteiro also pointed out that this opening forms part of a series of ongoing investments in the refurbishment of school sports facilities, with similar projects taking place at schools such as the Domingos Ramos Secondary School in Praia, the Olavo Moniz Secondary School in Sal, and Ludgero Lima Secondary School in São Vicente.
The Government of Cape Verde reaffirms its commitment to providing schools with better facilities for sporting activities, promoting diverse and inclusive physical education, and encouraging the emergence of new talent for national sport.
