On Saturday 28 March, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, visited Monte Trigo to find out about the progress of the expansion project for the solar photovoltaic power station and the water desalination plant.
During the visit, the minister emphasised that the project represents a significant transformation of the area’s energy and water supply systems. The new infrastructure will enable energy production capacity to be quadrupled, ensuring a 100% renewable supply, with a storage system capable of holding up to 800KWh.
“This is an investment representing a financial outlay of around 80,000 contos, funded by the Government of Cape Verde in partnership with the APP group. ”It was a major challenge to organise the logistics for transporting large-scale equipment, and we had to use a helicopter to ensure it reached this remote and hard-to-access location,” he said.
The project also includes a water production component, which addresses the community’s challenges in terms of both quantity and quality. Plans are in place to install a new desalination plant, with a capacity to produce 25 cubic metres of water per day.
“We are now practically in the final stages of installing the equipment, which demonstrates the Government’s commitment to putting people’s needs first, justifying all the effort that has been made,” added the Minister.
Monte Trigo, situated on the island of Santo Antão, is a fishing community with around 275 inhabitants, recognised for being the first village in the country to benefit from 100% renewable electricity.
During the visit, Minister Alexandre Monteiro was accompanied by the Minister for the Sea, Mr Jorge Santos, an engineer.
