"Artificial Intelligence brings advantages in terms of efficiency, innovation and productivity, but it also poses challenges to security and fundamental rights" - Ulisses Correia e Silva

The Prime Minister said today in Praia that Artificial Intelligence (AI) "brings advantages in terms of efficiency, innovation and productivity, but also imposes challenges to security and fundamental rights". Ulisses Correia e Silva made these statements at the opening of the International Conference on Personal Data Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, promoted by the National Data Protection Commission (CNDP), as part of the organisation's 10th anniversary celebrations.

"Ten years is a short time, but what has been the maturing of this important institution of the Republic shows that it was and has been a winning bet. A performance with competence, professionalism and independence," he said.

"Artificial intelligence can enter every area of a person's life and can be used for nefarious purposes at both an individual and societal level," which is why "guaranteeing the protection of personal data in the age of artificial intelligence is an imperative, given the limits needed to guarantee security and respect for fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution."

According to the Head of Government, "the challenge of guaranteeing the protection of personal data and cybersecurity in the age of AI and rapid technological advances is faced today with a troubled world in geopolitical terms and the development of post-truth ideology. No country is armoured against this onslaught," he warned.

"I hope that this conference will contribute to strengthening our regulatory framework and ensuring the responsible and safe use of AI," concludes the Prime Minister.

National and international experts took part in the event,

issues such as the impact of artificial intelligence on the protection of personal data, the regulation of AI, its application in strategic sectors such as health, education and finance, and the challenges of cybersecurity were addressed. The aim of the conference was to discuss legal and technological solutions that guarantee respect for digital rights without jeopardising technological innovation.
