The Secretary of State for Social Inclusion, Lídia Lima, presided over a ceremony to honour 50 Cape Verdean women today, 29 May, as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of National Independence and ahead of the 1st International Forum “Women and the Challenges of Development”, which will take place tomorrow, 30 May.
The aim of the ceremony was to recognise the career, merit and contribution of women who have distinguished themselves from independence to the present day, in the academic, cultural, sporting, economic, political and social fields.
In her speech, the Secretary of State stressed that this is “a special moment to celebrate life, the journey lived with courage, wisdom and love”, and highlighted the strength, resilience and positive impact of the women honoured in building a fairer and more inclusive society.
Recognising the essential role of women in family and community life, she also stressed the importance of combating female overload, calling for the sharing of responsibilities and the creation of adequate support services. “Women don't want to be heroines, they want to be respected, supported, recognised and given the space to make their dreams come true,” she said.
Lídia Lima also emphasised the public policies underway to empower women, with a focus on gender equality, combating violence, social protection and productive inclusion. She emphasised that “the greatest empowerment comes from faith, inner strength and the ability of women to transform challenges into achievements that benefit society as a whole”.
The ceremony was marked by a strong symbolic and emotional charge, reflecting the Cape Verdean government's commitment to valuing women and building a more equal, supportive and developed country.
